Synopsis:
Syria’s Lost Generation is the intensely personal story of two Syrian teenagers, Muna and Jihan, living unsettled lives as refugees. The film tackles a pressing contemporary issue—the displacement of more than 1 million Syrian youths due to the ongoing conflict in Syria. With compelling lead characters and unrestricted access, it provides a nuanced account of the private turmoil of girls at the nucleus of their adolescence, an inherently uncertain time, as they struggle to make sense of a chaotic world. The film leaves you simultaneously heartbroken and in awe of the strength, adaptability and sensitivity of these heroines.
Since the outbreak of civil war in Syria in March 2011, more than two million Syrians have fled their homes, with over half of the refugee population under the age of 18. The psychological and emotional stability of Syria’s exiled youth is of particular concern. To explore this issue, Ed Kashi and Julie Winokur traveled to Iraq and Jordan. As refugees stream across Syria’s borders, we are seeing the loss of another middle class Arab population and the destabilization of another Arab, Muslim country. The number of refugees grows daily as the possibility of a return to their homeland recedes. What will happen to Syria’s next generation? This question is central to the film’s narrative. It is the reason why the filmmakers wish to return to Muna and Jihan over time, to document their lives as they unfold.
