Focus Years: 2013 | Country: Hungary
Synopsis:
The film introduces Yezidis and one of their most important ritual, the Parading of the Peacock.
The Yezidis are a Kurdish-speaking religious minority living in Northern Iraq. Neither Muslims, nor Christians or Jews, the Yezidis follow their own religion despite centuries of pressure to convert to Islam. Yezidi religion was until recently based exclusively on oral tradition, and rituals played a significant part in the transmission of this tradition.
The most important of these rituals, as far as transmitting religious knowledge is concerned, was the Parading of the Peacock, when the Peacock standard, symbolizing the Peacock Angel, divine protector of the Yezidis, is periodically carried around Yezidi settlements.
This film follows the Peacock standard as it tours the settlements of the Sinjar Mountain on the Iraqi-Syrian border, and it reflects on the role of this ritual in Yezidi spiritual and social life, as well as the transformation Yezidi society is presently undergoing.
