"Heroes Do Exist in Colombia" was the name of the first major propaganda campaign of Colombia’s National Army. It consisted of a series of propaganda pieces which were part of the communication strategy of ex-president Alvaro Uribe’s (2002-2010) Policy of Democratic Security. Pivoting on the figure of the hero, the government’s publicists constructed an image of the military based on a logic of protection, incorporating unsettling communicative elements in order to produce emotive narratives of war. The propaganda strategy served to conceal the lamentable actions of a government which based its policy on a discourse of security, at the time when the country underwent one of the cruelest periods of the armed conflict, marked by the crimes of the paramilitary forces, the “false positive” scandal – the killing of innocent civilians in order to present them as enemy casualties – forced displacement and political corruption. Resorting to the voices of communication analysts, publicists and military officials, "Aiming at the Heart" critically scopes how publicity divulged the belligerent Democratic Security discourse, and how it justified the priority that the government assigned to the waging of war.
