France, hailed as the birthplace of human rights, is a far cry from respecting them when it comes to its contemporary judicial system—which functions differently depending on whether you are rich or poor, and above all, whether you are a French citizen... or not. Foreigners in France account for 18% of the prison population. What does this figure hide? National Identity takes us on an analytic journey into institutional racism in France. It articulates testimonies of foreigners just released from prison whose countries of origin are former colonies, and includes analyses by politicians, judges, lawyers and academics.
