Synopsis:
Most of the Chinese students would be sent by their schools to participate in a formation drill in a military camp before entering junior or senior middle school, since the mid-1990s. The measure is taken by the school in order to make the students more independent (most of them are the only child in their families). Our production unit spent ten days together with some students who were in this camp during their summer vacation in Langfang City, East China's Hebei province in August, 2002. We recorded the whole course of their training in the camp. These children come from ordinary Chinese families. This was their first time to be away from home and live in a military training camp, which is to them is quite strange. In such a special environment, the relationships among the students, their parents and the teachers severely transformed during this time. The military training camp serves as an epitome of Chinese society.
