Synopsis:
A counter-culture Bulgarian family flees society on their chaotic Noah’s Ark constructed inside a crumbling basement in downtown Sofia. The father, a former hippie-turned-messiah to this micro-community, preaches his vision of a unique and perfectly harmonious family life that defies all social norms. The family openly refuses to engage in ‘the System’, yet its members have to sell their hair, donate sperm, and carry surrogate pregnancies to earn money for “cigarettes, bread, and other things.â€
He Who Travels Alone is an intimate, yet discreet examination of this family that spans more than a decade. During that period, James, the wunderkind artist who at age six hosted regular art exhibitions, turns into a solitary nude model for art students, publishes a mystical novel, and invents an eternal engine. Devoted to the pursuit spiritual growth, James’s family has exiled themselves into eccentricity. By witnessing the everyday dimension of their journey, the film poses questions about the meaning of social living and its alternatives, the role of the family, and the boundaries of personal choice.
