A group of Italian people living in Barcelona follow with increasing alarm the news of their country they see reported in the Spanish mass media: violent episodes of racism, corruption, job insecurity, deterioration of the public health system, Mafia power, arrogance, destruction of the land. Civil society in their country is changing and people accept it.
The group in Barcelona must to do something to support the many expressions of resistance, ranging from land protection to defending rights. They must find a striking act of visibility. What can they do?
They decide to bring Italian citizens from all over Europe and leave on a ship, the "ship of rights,†set to sail from Barcelona to Genoa.
People from many European cities answer the call. The net gets bigger and the initiative grows to include different people, students, artists, emigrants, workers and well-known people (Dario Fo, Saramago) going in.
They want to have 1,000 people who, 150 years after Garibaldi's expedition, embark on his journey in reverse and land in Genoa—a simple, remarkable, strong, symbolic action.
