Choleando: Are Peruavians Racists or Not?| 1hr : 42mins
Director: Roberto De la Puente | Producer: Luis Domnguez
Focus Years: 2012 | Country: Peru
Synopsis:
In Peru we use the word "Cholo" a lot. It means "mestizo", a descendant of indigenous and Spanish people. But it is mainly used to denigrate and belittle those who are considered "inferior" to oneself.
This documentary wants to answer the following question: Why Peruvians live "choleándonos" ("cholo-ing") each other all the time?
To Mariananda, no doubt it is racism. Always has been, always will be. But Julio is not so sure. Really it is racism? Will not be confusing racism with many other types of discrimination that we practice? To begin: What is racism?
This documentary attempts to resolve which of the two is right, reviewing the multiple forms of discrimination practiced by Peruvians, asking about its origins and its unfortunate consequences. Through interviews, animations and images, we help Mariananda and Julio thoroughly understand the confusing system of racial discrimination in Peru.
