Synopsis:
The Berlin Wall was built to keep East Berliners in, and the influence of the West out. When it came down in 1989, it seemed that all the walls had come down. But it wasn’t true. Walls and high security fences are being built and maintained in many parts of the world – some of them quite surprising. "Worlds Apart" takes us to three walls that most of us have never seen or perhaps even heard of. The first surrounds the city of Ceuta, the southern gateway to the European Union. Between South Africa and Zimbabwe is a series of barbed wire fences to keep out poor Zimbabweans, desperate to leave the anarchy and poverty of their country. Finally, the small country of Bangladesh is being literally fenced in by India. The wall around Bangladesh will eventually be 4,000 kilometers long, making it the longest fence in the world. It’s proof that you don’t have to be rich to build a wall or a fence – just richer than whomever’s on the other side.
