Director: John Howarth and Nancy Durrell McKenna | Producer: Nancy Durell McKenna
Focus Years: 2009 | Country: United Kingdom
Synopsis:
It is estimated that up to 140 million women and girls have undergone some form of female genital mutilation, FGM, otherwise known as female circumcision. FGM should not be viewed as an isolated practice. It occurs in 28 countries, and its justification is that it is an important initiation which reinforces virginity, chastity, purity, marriageability and fidelity, and in some African countries affects over 90% of the female population.
This film, narrated by Meryl Streep, reports from four countries where the practice of FGM is an integral part of a woman’s life: Burkina Faso, Djibouti, Egypt and Ethiopia. It highlights the complex social, religious, cultural and economic issues which underpin the ongoing practice of FGM.
