Synopsis:
Most of us believe the war against slavery was won long ago and abolitionists were heroes from the past. To the 28 million men, women and children who live in slavery today, an abolitionist is something quite different. To Free the Slaves documents the ongoing struggle of the powerless, voiceless people whose lives are owned by others. In Sudan, a Canadian couple redeem slaves collected as booty of war; in Mali, Save the Children fights to bring home youths kidnapped and forced into slave labor; in Canada, ex-prostitute Cherry Kingsley helps young people enslaved in prostitution re-integrate into society; and in the brickyards of India, the Pandits work to free and rehabilitate brutalized worker families, and to re-educate their masters. To Free the Slaves gives a voice to the mute pain of those living in slavery all over the world, and celebrates those who are fighting to release them.
