Synopsis:
'Our Currency is Information' is the first episode of the documentary film series, Exposing the Invisible. While traditional media outlets have less and less time and money to put into investigative journalism, new forms of investigation are thriving. This film charts a new breed of journalist, developing and using new investigative techniques. Touching on issues around shady offshore economies and the complexity of company ownership schemes, the film highlights the importance of global cross-border work between networks of journalists, activists and hackers to uncover organised crime.
The film follows the work of Paul Radu, an investigative reporter based in Romania, who established the Organised Crime and Corruption Reporting Project. Paul shares some of the stories he and his network of investigators have exposed, and talks about how they did it.
Their investigations often span numerous countries and continents, and require certain skills and networks. Paul and his colleagues 'follow the money', tracking organised crime across borders by looking at where money comes from, and where it ends up. They piece together public information, such as company registries and border logs, to build up a picture of the network of people involved and their links to companies and crimes. One important factor in this process is the diversity of the people they work with – Paul works with journalists, activists, hackers and others, who all pool together their knowledge and expertise. They may be chasing criminals' cash, but for Paul and his team the currency they are trading in is information.
