El valor de la tierra / The Value of the Land| 20mins
Director: Adriana Otero | Producer: Nefertari Chalé
Focus Years: 2014 | Country: Mexico
Synopsis:
The Value of the Land reflects one of the gravest situations currently affecting Mexico’s rural areas: the loss of farming land as a result of peasants selling their communal holdings to private interests. Basilio is a peasant who lives in Tanil, a settlement in the municipality of Umán in the Yucatán Peninsula where the majority of the inhabitants have already sold their homesteads. Basilio fears that his situation will soon change. For some, the value of the land goes beyond productivity; while for others, it is an opportunity for economic advancement in which work is principally based on the transformation of the earth. This documentary shows only a fragment of the difficult circumstances in which the rural workers live and asks important questions about the future of the countryside.
