Focus Years: 2011 | Country: Congo, (DRC)
Synopsis:
A gift from the Pacha Mama, the coca leaf has been the subject of significant discussion over the past decades. This discussion has intensified recently, in line with the global debate on decriminalization and legalization of narcotic drugs.
We set out to look at this plant from a new perspective, hoping to decry the established link between the sacred leaf and the illegal drug derived from it: cocaine.
In doing so, we travel along the nerves of the coca leaf, moving gradually from the traditional to the industrial world, through Bolivia and Peru, from yesterday to today on a journey that reveals the vital social and cultural importance of the coca leaf to people across these two countries and the broader region.
