Amazonia, masato o petróleo (The Amazon: oil or masato?)| 52mins
Director: Josep Ramon Giménez | Producer: Lliga dels Drets dels Pobles
Focus Years: 2009 | Country: Spain
Synopsis:
This documentary has been made in the Peruvian Amazon and it shows the pernicious effect of economic globalization in the Amazon and the inhabitants of the first biodiversity richest region in the Planet. Masato is a drink made with boiled manioc that identifies the indigenous communities, but oil is not a sign of richness, paradox, it is the origin of illness, death, social dysfunction… And the Peruvian Government is opening the doors of the forest to the transnational companies, against the indigenous rights.
“The Amazon: oil or masato” shows the disrespect of the political and economic powers toward the forest and its inhabitants, because they practice a subsistence economy and not a productive one.
It seeks to denounce the policy of Peruvian Government against the indigenous and peasants living in the forest, considered like second-class citizens. Their territories are invaded and they are cheated to deliver the natural resources to the national and transnational companies to satisfy the Free Trade Treaty between Peru and the United States.
