DOC: The most critical Green emergency of all may also be the most overlooked. Acres upon acres of the earth’s ranchlands and croplands are slowly desertifying and are requiring more and more inputs of fertilizers and other chemicals just to gain the same yields as in the past. The result is that the planet’s grasslands can no longer support our food needs, replenish our water, let alone support the wildlife – big and small – on which our ecosystems rely for balance. Conversely, grasslands naturally remove CO2 from the atmosphere and help eliminate greenhouse gases. But increasing worldwide desertification has left us with land that can no longer remove and store CO2 with the efficiency required to slow global warming. Through this one-hour documentary, we visit sites around the world where the use of an integrated “holistic†approach to land management has resulted in dramatically improved topsoil and biodiversity, which reverses desertification and becomes part of a solution to global warming. As we learn of the possibilities, children from around the globe help us understand how important the issue is to everyone’s future.
“Healing the Earth†holds a critical part of the answer to one of the world’s most formidable problems. And the results are shown to be vast, long-lasting and life-changing for the individuals involved, for their communities and for the world.
