My Grandmother, a Heroine?| 51mins
Director: Tatiana de Perlinghi | Producer: Marc Schulman, Michel Perin & Patrick Van Hautem
Focus Years: 2003 | Country: Belgium
Synopsis:
The granddaughter tells the story of her Chinese grandmother, who during WWII saved the lives of several civilians condemned to death by the Nazis in Ecaussines, making her a heroine on the scale of a small town in Belgium. Half a century later, after 50 harsh years on the Chinese people and especially Chinese women, the Chinese authorities will do anything to recreate “the honourable reputation†and polish the image of the Chinese society and in particular the role of the women. The story of grandma becomes bigger than life and national Chinese television gets interested. All of a sudden there is a whole crew from the CCTV shooting a heroic saga vaguely inspired by the story of Siou-Ling in a series of 16 episodes. Now, granddaughter Tatiana wonders ... why do the Chinese need my grandma as their next national heroine? I’m going to ask them all and shoot it!
