Becoming Sustainable conveys the transforming story of one young filmmaker-activist's quest to live a '100% sustainable' lifestyle. In 2008, city-dwelling student filmmaker Caroline Savery set out to minimize her environmental footprint to a 'sustainable' level, all while documenting the process for a web episode series called Sust Enable. What at first seemed like a straightforward objective—drastically reducing her environmental footprint to within "one seven-billionth of the Earth"--instead becomes a deep inquiry into how our society struggles to make sense of issues of sustainability. In Caroline's five-year journey to hit upon the true meaning of "sustainability" in her life, we see reflections of a planet grappling with the dawning awareness, devastation, and redemption brought about by living out of balance. As Caroline's awareness evolves, so too do the film's narrative and styles (coining the term 'metamentary' to describe the film's morphing braiding of story and style). Becoming Sustainable is a unique film experience, not to be missed by anyone who has contemplated how to make the world a better place.
