GUATEMALA'S RESISTANCE MOVEMENT| 11mins
Director: Maggie Padlewska | Producer: Maggie Padlewska
Focus Years: 2014 | Country: Canada
Synopsis:
“I want Canadians to know that the silver, and possibly the gold, being extracted from Guatemala – is bloodstained!â€
Those are the words of human rights lawyer and activist Rafael Maldonaldo, a man who travelled to Ottawa in March 2014, and the man who on the day of his visit inspired me to pack my gear and travel to San Rafael de Las Flores. Maldonaldo spoke passionately about the human rights violations taking place in rural San Rafael and the neighbouring region. Nearly all but a handful of residents expressed clear opposition to the Escobal Mine, a mining project owned and operated by Canadian based, Tahoe Resources Inc. Still, the project went ahead as planned.
This piece is a simple glimpse at the enduring resilience and resistance of the land's rightful owners and caretakers vis-a-vis one of America's wealthy mining corporations.
