Director: Manuela Morales | Producer: Manuela Morales
Focus Years: 2014 | Country: Canada
Synopsis:
On September 11,1973, a military coup d’etat took place in Chile and democratically elected president, Salvador Allende was removed and killed. Augusto Pinochet was installed marking the beginning of a seventeen-year dictatorship and the end of a political progression that had inspired solidarity and hope in Chileans. My father, Francisco Morales, was a member of a left wing party and was arrested, tortured, detained and finally exiled to England for his actions. In England he met my mother and had me. Though estranged from me for most of my life the magnitude of his experiences were present in my daily life.
I went to Chile for the second time in my life to visit my father, eager to understand his life and the culture of a country I call my own. From this trip we produced this four-part video together. The piece begins by discussing Chile before and during the coup, delves into my father’s personal story of torture and exile, and finally examines our relationship and how these big, political events can trickle down to affect individuals.
