Director: Andrés Cornejo | Producer: Andrés Rodriguez
Focus Years: 2014 | Country: Ecuador
Synopsis:
Salango is a small parish south of Manabi. What this land means to Ecuador, however, is enormous. Its name is associated with the legacy of the pre-Columbian Wancavilca-Manta cultures, the Spondylus shell, humpback whales that arrive each year to mate, the eponymous island and its coral reefs, and the wealth of marine life. It is here, in one of the places with greatest archaeological and environmental heritage of our country, where the Polar processing fishmeal has been operating for 35 years. What does not emerge from the idyllic postcards of the area is the foul smell that pollutes the air, the picture of people sickened by toxic waste from the factory, the nasty black smoke flowing into the sea directly from the pipeline of the processor. Hence, the struggle of a few members of the community, who have not given up and demand that the Polar leave.
