                    Synopsis:
Bridges destroyed by flood waters are a familiar site all along the Swat River in Pakistan. Although a few cable cars remain, they can’t take the weight of heavy relief items and there is a shortage of helicopters. So it was left to tradition to come to the rescue of cut-off villages. In past times, people used rafts, or "jalas", made of blown-up animals skins to ferry themselves and goods across the river. With road access washed away, local UNHCR staff came up with the idea of adapting the rafts to transport supplies. On a good day, the rafts make enough trips to help about a hundred families, many of which might otherwise have had to wait a long time to receive supplies.
