Focus Years: 2002 | Country: Switzerland
Synopsis:
Agnes Martin, the child of an Irish immigrant farmer, was born in 1912 in Canada. Moving to the United States she established as an artist and became friends with Ad Reinhard, Mark Rothko, Robert Newman and other artists in the avant-garde movement. Considered one of the most important figures on the contemporary American art (classical modernism and minimal art), she moved to New Mexico in the Fifties to live in solitude. Early in the Sixties, she achieved an international reputation with radically abstract grids - manifestations of transcendental experiences - inspired by a life of contemplation. This documentary film was made possible by the friendly relationship which the filmmaker Thomas Luechinger established with the artist. On the agreement that the film must be made without the help of any assistants, Agnes Martin accepted for the first time to be filmed at work and in her home, providing a rare glimpse of a contemplative life and insight into her philosophy.
