Director: Gerhard Schick | Producer: Miriam Jakobs
Focus Years: 2007 | Country: Germany
Synopsis:
Taking a close look at the other-than-normative body is still a taboo in most societies. The German dancer and choreographer Gerda Koenig, who suffers from muscular atrophy, brings the often hidden away bodies into the bright light of the stage. The film shows her creating a new dance show in Sao Paulo, Brazil. The camera observes the audition process and the difficult selection of the new dancers as well as many intimate moments of the rehearsals over a period of two months. At the same time, the film casts a glance at the hidden taboos of Brazilian society and presents them through the eyes of the dancers. Finally, a new dance piece is brought to life and the premiere turns out to be a huge success. The dance confronts the audience with provocative questions about our notions of body, beauty and perfection – and so does the film.
