Brothers in the Buddha| 1hr : 10mins
Director: Beth, Wishart MacKenzie | Producer: Beth, Wishart MacKenzie
Focus Years: 2014 | Country: Canada
Synopsis:
'Brothers in the Buddha' (70 min) features, Michael, a seventeen year old Vietnamese-Canadian youth who has taken up a unique discipline: at the tender age of ten, Michael was ordained as a novice monk at the Truc Lam Vietnamese Buddhist Monastery in the heart of the Canadian city of Edmonton.
The documentary examines the personal life and challenge taken up by Michael, both at the monastery and in his community. We observe how he, like other adolescents his age, is seeking to define his identity in the modern world. We come to know Michael not as a novelty, but as a neighbour, and in the process, gain a sympathetic understanding of the religious tradition he is exploring and the community he stands within.
With its focus on one young Canadian, the only child of a Vietnamese-Canadian refugee family, 'Brothers in the Buddha' speaks in personal terms of the larger process of multicultural accommodation and coexistence that continues to shape the nation of Canada today.
