Focus Years: 2014 | Country: Iraq
Synopsis:
Escaping the Saddam Hussein regime in Iraq in the early 90s, Gulzar and Shwan, parents of Dr Lana Askari escape to the Netherlands as refugees to become a part of the Kurdish Diaspora resettled in Europe for over two decades. With the fall of the regime in 2003, Autonomous Iraqi Kurdistan was recognized and developed into a safe haven for the Kurdish population living in northern Iraq. However, with the emergence of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIL), the social and political landscape in the Middle East started changing drastically. In “Haraka Baraka: Movement is a Blessingâ€, Lana Askari, the filmmaker documents the ‘homecoming’ of her parents to Kurdistan in a “self-reflexive manner whilst addressing the renegotiation of belonging, temporality and future during a (seemingly) timeless crisis.â€
