Synopsis:
Multiculturalism, Uprooting, Migration and the Life of the Others… About the documentary: This is the story of the ones, who were vanished; forced to go away; stayed; arrived. The story is about a city that was deserted and crowded at the same time… The documentary “Giaour Neighbourhood / Gavur Mahallesi”, which will be produced by Karşı Film and directed by Yusuf Kenan Beysülen, is about a city, Diyarbakır that once upon a time was a site of ethnic, religious and cultural diversity but then, after 1915, lost its diversity through exiles, deaths and migration. It is also about Mıgırdiç Margosyan, who forged iron with his hammer in this city till 1953 as an apprentice blacksmith and then, as Master Margos from Diyarbakır, presented old and new Diyarbakır to Armenian, Turkish and world literature with his pen, using his poetic language. This documentary tells a story about multiculturalism, uprooting and migration in the triangle formed by Istanbul, Diyarbakır and Heredan, which is a distant village of Diyarbakır. This is the story of Hasirli Neighbourhood in the walls of Diyarbakır-SUR, which is known as Hancepek previously and also known as “Giaour / Gavur” between the folk since it was inhabited mostly by Christians. The story is inspired from Mıgırdiç Margosyan’s book of the same name, “Giaour Neighbourhood / Gavur Mahallesi”. With the participation of Mıgırdiç Margosyan, his testimonies and animations and illustrations, it is aimed to depict the social and cultural structure of Diyarbakır and its religious and ethnic diversity as well as the fact of “being the other”, especially in Diyarbakır, and in general in Turkey.
