The Days of Tarap| 1hr : 38mins
Director: Herve Tiberghien | Producer: Herve Tiberghien
Focus Years: 2013 | Country: France
Synopsis:
It all began with an encounter with an old book, "Tarap, a valley in the Himalayas", which portrays a small isolated community and its spiritual leader, Lama Kagar Rimpoche, who lives at the heart of the Nepalese Dolpo, a culturally Tibetan region. At the time, the author and ethnologist was wondering what would become of the Dolpo men and women in a generation or two, as he believed in their inevitable "cultural death".
50 years after Corneille Jest, and following in his footsteps, I traveled to the "valley of good horses". In this region that lies between 4,000 and 5,000 meters above sea level, and amongst a sacred nature, the Tarapas are trying to find their way between tradition and modernity.
Being immersed in another reality makes us face the flaws of our own society. In a time when our societies question their finality, exploring one of the last traditional communities in the Himalayas, giving the people a voice and listening to what they have to say, was the ultimate aim of this documentary.
