Synopsis:
Running home from school on a hot West African afternoon, fourteen-year-old Sidiki Conde fell to the ground and never walked on his feet again.
Instead of accepting a life of dragging his body through the dust-filled streets of Guinea, he found a forest clearing and taught himself to dance on his hands. He then surprised his village by participating in the rite-of-passage dance ceremony, changing the way his people view those labeled as disabled. In Guinea, as in most cultures, prejudice against people with differences creates unnecessary obstacles. Sidiki Conde is an extraordinary artist whose life's work is empowering people of all abilities.
The feature-length documentary SiDiKi takes the audience on a journey from Sidiki's current home in New York City's East Village to the Guinean village of Moncellia that awakened his spirit through dance. Paralleling this journey is the transformation of students from the Brookville Center for Children's Services who are learning to cope with their own disabilities by finding their inner rhythm through dancing in one of Sidiki's workshops.
SiDiKi tells a story that challenges societies' preconceptions on disabilities and stimulates the audience to find their own courageous rhythm; it confronts our intolerance toward those who are atypical, opening our eyes to the truth that ability is born of spirit, not body, and that we each move to a beat of our own.
