Director Statement
I was driven to make this film by many things. A longstanding commitment to the environment and to combating inequality lead me to teach ecology and humanities to teenagers in an alternative international school. I then went on to study a masters in political ecology, degrowth and environmental justice, out of which came the inspiration to make Fairytales of Growth.
The information we receive on climate change is so disparate and confusing, it can lead to very dangerous narratives being adopted without truly understanding their implications. I wanted to produce something that could gather much of what I had learnt about the roots of the climate crisis and put it into simple language.
Inspired by Greta’s actions, I began participating in environmental activism in Barcelona, where I met Maria once again (we had been in the same class studying degrowth and ecological economics that summer) and started following Fridays for Future Barcelona from its earliest of days. Their thoroughness and dedication only served to further inspire me, and became crucial in my wanting to make a film driven by this youthful, zealous energy that nevertheless holds on to hope despite the dangers looming ahead.
The film is available in 8 languages , has won many awards at international film festivals.
