Director: Waltraud Paschinger | Producer: Heinrich Mayer
Focus Years: 1999 | Country: Austria
Synopsis:
Abandoned gravel and sand pits are great habitats, and last retreats for a multitude of rare plants and animals. A fascinating example of how nature re-conquers industrial wasteland. Excavations of gravel, sand or stone leave behind a bare, ravaged landscape devoid of greenery - at first glance. A closer look discloses a fascinating world: bee-eaters, bank swallows, ant-lions, rare locusts, reptiles and amphibians all threatened with extinction. For many plants and animals the disused pits and quarries are an ideal habitat and often a last resort. The forms these excavated pits assume - steep walls of sand, bare, stony, hot flats right next to puddles and ponds - used also to be fashioned by free-flowing natural rivers. High water would sweep away the soil and leave behind almost vertical banks and wide expanses of stony, barren ground. Today, river landscapes of this kind are hard to find in Central Europe. And their inhabitants have become similarly rare. This odd company of pioneer plants and animals is now almost exclusively common to the former gravel-, sand- and clay-pits, or stone quarries. “Trails in the Sand†draws a picture of a very mixed commune, describes its behaviour and fight for survival in the middle of an industrial wasteland, illustrates the reclamation process.
