Synopsis:
Malteser International is the worldwide relief agency of the Sovereign Order of Malta for humanitarian aid. It provides aid in all parts of the world without distinction of religion, race, or political persuasion. Malteser International works in four countries in eastern Africa: DR Congo, Uganda, Kenya, and Sudan, and establishes and promotes primary health care services, fights diseases and epidemics, and builds up capacities of the local health care staff.
Leprosy and sleeping sickness continue to be widespread in Africa. There is a lack of education, proper treatment, and medicine. Due to instability, wars, migration, and economic crises, infection rates of sleeping sickness increased up to the present number of 500,000 patients in the whole of Africa. It is fatal if not treated.
