Synopsis:
Ecotourism is entirely a new approach in tourism. It can be categorised as tourism program that is "nature based, ecologically sustainable, where education and interpretation is a major constituent and where local people are benefited." The film "Leave Nothing But Footprints" looks to define this emerging new concept of ecotourism in the rapidly booming tourism sector in India. Set in the Himalayan region, the film studies the downside of mainstream tourism and looks at critical issues such as garbage and waste disposal while attempting to map out the new approach to tourism. By juxtaposing sequences of "mainstream" tourism with alternate forms of tourism, the film attempts to suggest ways on "how not to develop tourism". "Leave Nothing But Footprints" travels to natural areas to highlight the experiences of independent groups that have successfully demonstrated that appreciating the cultural and natural history of the environment, taking care not to disturb the integrity of the ecosystem, while creating economic opportunities that make conservation and protection of natural resources advantageous to the local people.
