Synopsis:
Natabar Sarangi, a farmer in eastern India is constantly searching, saving, planting and sharing the seeds native to Orissa - which he proudly proclaims as "the mother of rice". Natabar’s work is very much a bottom-up approach empowering the farmers to protect their environment and to return to a low-input, sustainable system of agriculture. India has lost 90 percent of its original 110,000 rice varieties and Natabar’s work is not only crucial for the biodiversity of India but also for food traditions and social cohesion that survive though these seeds. Some people would term him as a fantasist who should be looking to the future rather than the past, but Natabar knows the importance of what we are about to loose and its future implications in the context of a global shift in agricultural policy towards industrialized methods which are constantly undermining the traditional knowledge passed through generation of farmers.
