Director: Abhishek Jain | Producer: Self (Students)
Focus Years: 2008 | Country: India
Synopsis:
In Indian mythology, River Ganga is the most revered and worshiped river. It is believed, the river descended on earth at the instance of king Bhagiratha who brought the river to earth to wash the sins of his ancestors. It has been reported by many non-governmental organizations and some environmentalists that the river is gradually shrinking and drying up. The pictures taken through satellite by "Google Earth" have shown that river has shrunk and dried up at some places. The question therefore comes in the mind as to the reasons why this phenomenon could be happening? Besides other human interventions and exploitation, the construction and operation of dams are also contributing to the reduction in the natural flow of the river. Further, with global warming, the glaciers are also receding. This also seems to be affecting the flow of the river Ganga which emerges from Gangotri glacier. Those depending on the river water for their livelihood and agriculture produce could be adversely affected. This can put a question mark on the food security of the country.
