Il Suolo Minacciato (Land Under Threat)| 46mins
Director: Nicola Dall'Olio | Producer: WWF Parma
Focus Years: 2009 | Country: Italy
Synopsis:
Some of the most fertile agricultural land in Europe can be found in the Po Valley, Italy. Since the early 1990s, however, thousands of hectares of this land have been sealed and consumed by unregulated urban sprawl. In the Province of Parma alone - the Italian ‘Food Valley’ famous for producing food products such as P.D.O. Parma ham and Parmesan cheese - urban sprawl advances at a rate of more than one hectare per day. “Il Suolo Minacciato (Land Under Threat)†uses this paradoxical and exemplary case to highlight what is happening to the landscape and agricultural soil throughout the Po Valley. Local farmers and experts in sustainable land development and agriculture are interviewed as the documentary looks at the causes and local/global impacts of soil consumption. It then suggests possible ways of preserving this limited and non-renewable natural resource, upon which we human beings depend for our livelihoods. The experts interviewed include Carlo Petrini, founder of the international NGO “Slow Foodâ€, Wolfgang Sachs, researcher on globalization issues at the Wuppertal Institut (Germany), Edoardo Salzano, a leading Italian urbanist, Luca Mercalli, climatologist and President of the Italian Meteorological Society, Paolo Pileri, researcher at the Polytechnic University of Milan and Scientific Director of the National Observatory on Land Consumption.
