Synopsis:
On Monday, 14 April 2003, six Heads of State and Prime Ministers published a joint declaration to celebrate the conclusion of the gigantic human genome-sequencing project. The discovery was astonishing: 45 percent of our genetic heritage is made up of viral sequences. Viruses are within us! Vestiges of ancestral infections in man, they have become over time honest citizens of our genetic heritage. Furthermore, they actually allowed us to evolve, and for our own benefit in the end. Only just recently, the mission was clear: win the battle against viruses. Some were even inclined to announce a victorious outcome to this war. That was a case of serious underestimation of viruses. If they destroy us, they can also do us good. It is this hitherto untold story that we wish to tell in this documentary.
