Synopsis:
“Dan Sprick’s studio is lit solely by outdoor light, and his hyper-realistic paintings look more like mirrored reflections than representations. His personality, at first meeting, seemed in contrast to the expansiveness of the space. He is more interested in listening than talking. He invited me to shoot his process of painting a human skeleton. He knew that I had recently lost a brother to cancer, and his aging parents compelled him to investigate the nature of death. We spent two quiet weeks together, watching the painting take shape, listening more to the silences and whir of my super 8 camera than to our own voices. When we did talk, our discussions turned to the strange fact that humans exist at all. He is driven by an empirical approach to explaining existence, and perhaps mine is a bit more mystical. But our dialogue always returned to the weird and marvelous fact that, somehow, in all of the expansiveness of space, our planet and our species appeared.”
