Synopsis:
My film, “The Legend of Rosalie,†is a ten-minute documentary that takes place in Slab City, a small trailer park community in Southern California’s Mojave Desert. The film uses archival footage and interviews to tell the story of beautiful and mysterious woman known to locals simply as “Rosalie.†Rosalie arrived in Slab City in her early fifties and was diagnosed with breast cancer shortly thereafter. She died a couple of years later, but not before she supervised the building of the Lizard Tree Library out of found and donated materials. For the film, I interviewed six longtime residents of Slab City who knew and loved Rosalie. I also take viewers on a tour of the library, which combines footage I shot with archival footage of Rosalie in her library shortly before she died. The film is ostensibly about Rosalie and how residents of Slab City remember her, but the real focus ends up being on the community itself. As we are introduced to the various characters that knew Rosalie, a picture begins to emerge of an environment characterized by austere natural beauty, decay and a sense of weathered wildness that can’t help but remind one of iconic representations of the West.
