At the cost of Rs 3,500 crores, a dam had been planned across the Giri river, submerging 1630 hectares of the Renuka Valley in Himachal Pradesh. The plan was to meet Delhi's unending demands for water, at the usual cost of displacing societies, and submerging fertile and irreplaceable forestland. In October 2010, the environment clearance for the dam was rescinded.
