Focus Years: 1991 | Country: United States
Synopsis:
In “Sustaining America's Agricultureâ€, narrated by film and TV personality Raymond Burr, more than a dozen farmers and agricultural experts explain techniques and policies to preserve and enhance America's agricultural prosperity. The Lewis Ashton farm has been in the family since 1630. The founder of Walnut Acres, Paul Keene, was urged by Mohandas Gandhi to become a farmer. The Practical Farmers of Iowa mimic nature's diversity by using strip intercropping, which optimizes yields synergistically. Fruit grower Paul Buxman uses integrated pest management to reduce the need for pesticides. The film concludes that by using innovative techniques, farmers can maintain yield, reduce costs for inputs, and enhance nutritional value.
