Director: Sorcha Hamilton | Producer: Mary Rose Doorly
Focus Years: 2006 | Country: Ireland
Synopsis:
For small-boat fishermen like Willie Dowling, life is getting harder. Quotas, pricing and "big companies" are putting huge pressure on the industry. Set in Dun Laoghaire, a harbor town on the outskirts of Dublin, this documentary takes a close look at the life of an Irish fisherman. We follow Willie as he prepares to go out to sea after dawn, as he readies his boat for the day’s catch of whelk, then unloads the fish for collection at the harbor for export to Japan. Willie describes how the industry has changed over the years, the many demands of his lifestyle, why he loves the sea and, most poignantly, the challenges facing the "old hands" of the fishing trade.
