Synopsis:
Elma Shaw is a young Liberian writer and filmmaker and one of the few women novelists in her country’s 175-year history. Like all Liberians, Elma suffered the pain of years of brutal civil war. Now that the bloodshed is over, Elma has dedicated her life to healing her and her nation’s wounds as an artist, activist, and humanitarian.
Elma’s novel, Redemption Road, tells the story of Bendu, a Liberian woman whose memories of war leave her tortured with regret and anger. Bendu has a choice: seek revenge on those who wronged her or seek redemption for herself and her burdened spirit. Bendu commits to peace through communication and reconciliation, asking all who bore witness to the evil of war to share their stories. Elma, as a storyteller, transforms pain into power through the magical healing power of art.
Our film celebrates the women of Liberia who together are building a future for this beleaguered African nation. Elma is both our narrator and guide, reading passages from her book to navigate a conflict that turned neighbor against neighbor, tribe against tribe. The voices of Elma's characters blend with the voices of Jackie Redd, Mickey Kesseley, and Florence Ballah, three Liberian women whose experiences in war illustrate the resilience and courage that inspired Elma to write her novel.
Through it all, we are reminded that unless people talk honestly and openly, the deeply rooted causes of conflict will lead to conflict once again. It is part poetry, part history, and part cautionary tale.
