Under Cover Inside the U.S. Dairy Industry| 6mins
Director: Jim Wickens | Producer: Eco Storm
Focus Years: 2010 | Country: United Kingdom
Synopsis:
With a recent proposal to build a U.S.-style mega dairy at Nocton in England, the Ecologist Film Unit travelled to the United States to witness first-hand the extent of the problems associated with our thirst for milk. From pollution of local drinking water, to breathing problems associated with the influx of huge numbers of cows - mega dairies are causing a host of environmental difficulties for local communities. The problems don’t end there, however, with local residents complaining of heavy-handed techniques by the dairy farmers to suppress information on what really goes on behind closed doors in their dairies. Misinformation is rife, and local communities are the biggest losers. There are over 900,000 cows in California and with a billion dollars worth of milk produced each year, uncovering the reality behind this massive industry is vital.
