“Acid Test: The Global Challenge of Ocean Acidification†is a groundbreaking documentary produced by the Natural Resources Defense Council (NRDC), featuring Sigourney Weaver. This film explores the startling phenomenon of ocean acidification, which may soon challenge marine life on a scale that has not occurred for tens of millions of years. Burning fossil fuels creates carbon dioxide pollution, the primary cause of global warming. But carbon dioxide pollution also is profoundly changing ocean chemistry, rapidly making the water more acidic. The impacts of rising acidity may soon be catastrophic. Thousands of ocean species create protective shells to survive, but when ocean acidity gets too high, shells dissolve. Scientists now believe that unless we slash carbon dioxide pollution quickly, rising acidity may wipe out species that form the foundation of the ocean’s food web. Corals, plankton, shellfish and all of the life that depend on them are at risk.
