Synopsis:
The Meitei people of Manipur used to practice the Lai Haraoba cult before Vaishnavite Hinduism came to the valley. Unique to this cult were the female religious functionaries known as the Maibis. The Maibis mediated between the people and their ancestral deities with a unique form of supplication that included rituals, trance, dance and music. Sacred Space attempts to journey into the lives of the Maibis, especially in context of the modern world and its pressures and also in context of a revival of interest by the Meitei people in their ancient beliefs.
