It's the end of the 1990s. Nicola has been stuck in this hospital bed for several years, suffering from a degenerative disease that has reduced his capacity to move and even breathe. While obviously strictly circumscribed, his hospital life is nevertheless abundant in relationship. His doctor, Daniele, who looks after him, has become his best friend, while his sister Giulia visits regularly. However, this is not sufficient for Nicola, and with the arrival of a new portable breathing system he finds that he's suddenly able to get out of his hospital bed, for the first time in years. His dream, perhaps his only dream, is to go back to the sea - but he needs Daniele to help him make this a reality. The Doctor accepts, although he realizes that he could be risking his career, if anything goes wrong. The relationship between the two men is sorely tested as they journey towards Nicola's desired end.
