Cosmic explosions play a critical role in our lives. Stated simply, without cosmic explosions we would not be here. Shri Kulkarni, A.D. White Professor-at-Large, Director of Caltech Optical Observatories and Professor of Astronomy, reviews the development of the history of cosmic explosions. This is a subject which is only one hundred years old, yet there has been great progress achieved in the field: Gamma-ray bursts, magnetars and supernovae have now entered the lay language.
