“L’Airone†(“The Heronâ€) by Giorgio Bassani tells about the last day in the life of Edgardo Limentani, a rich Jewish landowner living in Ferrara Italy. His day starts quite early, before dawn, a cold and foggy dawn in the winter 1947. He sets out in his Aprilia car to go huntingl in Volano, in the ‘Basso Ferrarese’, the lower province of Ferrara. Edgardo is a prey to his “life’s troublesâ€, which he tells us during his journey marked by stops in Codigoro, Volano, and Codigoro again.
His day ends in the evening, when he gets back home and commits suicide, the only way for him to put an end to “the annoying noises of life†and to find happiness.
