Alma M. Karlin is a Slovenian phenomenon, a daring and brave woman who, between 1919 and 1927, set out on a perilous and risky eight-year journey around the world equipped with a typewriter, the famed Erika. It is this journey in the quest for knowledge of herself (as Alma calls it), a search for eternal truths about existence and life, religion and cultures, which lead her to a higher level of spirituality and philosophical awareness which finds an increasingly strong expression in her later writing. This journey gives insight into the mental world of Alma M. Karlin, her suffering, crises, as well as persistent dedication to a higher aim which, regardless of setbacks and sometimes hopeless life situations, always drives her to pursue her goal.
